      Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of the year to travel to Greece ?

It depends on where you want to go. The best months to visit the islands are May, June, early July, late August, September and early October. Avoid the dates July 20th to August 20th which are the busiest of the tourist season, and late October because the weather gradually deteriorates. If you want to visit the mainland, then March, April, May, June, September and October are suitable months. July and August are both very warm and busy.

Passports & Visas: What is required ?

Overall E.U nationals and US/Canadian citizens do not need a visa. US/Canadians visitors must have a valid passport that will be in effect at least another 3 months after the end of their trip. For more information, please contact the appropriate consulate or embassy.

      Are vaccinations required?

No special vaccinations or immunizations are needed when travelling to Greece.

What is the voltage in Greece ?

220 V (pls. bring your transformer with you)

What should I pack for this wonderful trip in August?

When planning what to wear in Greece in summer, pack tank tops, vests, shorts, mini-skirts, and light dresses; these can all be in bright, colorful shades to reflect the season. Opt for thin, light materials like cotton and linen for extra breathability and coolness.

I have heard that the Greeks are rude. Is this true?

This is untrue in a general sense but of course there are exceptions. Many Greeks don’t hide their emotions very well. In most countries the people who have contact with tourists are well trained to keep a smile and be polite no matter what. I don’t think you can do that with the Greeks nor can you control who the tourist comes into contact with because the entire country is visited, not just a few scattered resorts on one or two islands. But at the same time that you have a few people acting like jerks you also have those who go above and beyond the call of duty or hospitality. So its not a matter of saying the Greeks are rude. The Greeks are a little bit of everything. Greece is not Disneyland, or a resort. It’s a whole country and you can’t make a whole country behave the way you think they should. That is why when you go to places like Jamaica you have barbed-wire fences around the resorts and beaches where the tourists go. In Greece you go everywhere and meet everyone.

Why is there no tipping in Europe?

Tipping in Europe isn’t as common as it is in the U.S., and some countries even consider it excessive and unnecessary. In general, though, a good rule of thumb is to err on the side of a modest tip (5 to 10 percent) as people in service already earn a decent wage.

How long before a flight should I arrive at Athens Airport?

On your departure, make sure you are at the airport at least 2 hours before your plane leaves especially in the busy season. Check-in immediately so you will know which gate you have to go to and when it closes… unless Athens has you in it’s spell and you want to stay there forever.

Do you tip taxi drivers in Greece?

In Greece you won’t always be expected to tip your taxi driver. … If you do decide to tip your taxi driver round-up the fare, or leave between 5% and 10%. If you’ve hired a private driver leave around 20 Euros per day.

How many terminals does Athens airport have?

The airport currently has two terminals, the main terminal and the satellite terminal accessible by an underground link from the main terminal.

Can you drink the tap water in Athens?

Athens tap water is safe to drink. … And most restaurants do serve both bottled water and tap water.

How much money should I bring to Greece?

Make it a 30 per person per day, sincerely though we don’t spend that amount of money for food everyday, since monthly salary is less than 500 euros for many many people.

Can you use US dollars in Greece?

Euro is the legal tender in Greece and another 16 countries in Europe. … The people of Greece will not welcome US dollars as tips, as it will cost them time and money to change them into euros. Greece uses the euro, and that is the only currency in the country.

Traditional Greek Dinner with Smashing of the Plates
Every tourist is curious about is the tradition of smashing plates or glasses during celebratory occasions. The origin of this strange custom is not known in much detail. What is certain is that it originated in Greece and soon filtered down to Cyprus. A celebratory ritual at weddings and other parties and celebrations, plates would be thrown to the floor and smashed whilst singing and dancing. Just prior to the plate smashing, there would have been a performance on stage by known stage artistes. Knives would be thrown, specifically towards the feet of performing artists on stage, with the thrower shouting "Opa!" to signify respect to the artist and indicate enjoyment and approval of their performance. It is said this custom is an expression of 'Kefi', which roughly translated means 'the spirit of joy, passion, enthusiasm, high spirits, or frenzy'.
